**INTER Milan's 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final will be remembered more for Diego Milito's two brilliant goals and the sub-plots and intrigues surrounding the game rather than the football.
Staged in Real Madrid's awesome Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Uefa president Michel Platini's idea of switching the final from a Wednesday to a Saturday lent even more drama to the event than usual. The noisy, rollicking input from both sets of fans created an unforgettable atmosphere.

A moment of shared respect summed up the essential bonhomie of the occasion and it came when Milito, waving at the crowd in celebration, suddenly realised he was waving at the Bayern fans. But instead of booing him the German supporters warmly applauded him back.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho hugged Bayern winger Arjen Robben – they were together for three years at Chelsea – during a short break of play in the first half. Mourinho and Bayern manager Louis Van Gaal, whose friendship goes back to their days together at Barcelona, even hugged before the end of the game with Inter's victory all but assured.

At times it was more of a love-in than a win-at-all-costs final, but there was hardly a malicious tackle or a cross word and the game more than lived up to expectations. Never a classic, it was still totally enthralling. Mourinho said his men "followed my instructions perfectly" and eventually finished as convincing winners.

The two goals Milito scored to beat Bayern capped an astonishing run of personal success after scoring the only goal against AS Roma when Inter won the Italian Cup on 5 May, and the only goal last week against Siena when they clinched the Serie A title.

The 30-year-old Argentine now heads to South Africa for his first World Cup, while Mourinho looks all set to leave Milan for Madrid – where he could seek to be reunited with Milito, a likely signing target along with Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder. While Mourinho won his personal duel with Van Gaal, Sneijder ultimately had more impact than his friend and Dutch international team mate Robben, who worked tirelessly down Bayern's right but could not find a goal for himself or misfiring strike pair Ivica Olic and Thomas Mueller.

Milito made his presence felt. He got the breakthrough after 35 minutes when he chose his spot perfectly after a long clearance upfield by goalkeeper Julio Cesar. He made the game safe 20 minutes from time by rounding Daniel Van Buyten, switching feet and giving Hans-Jorg Butt no chance with a curling inswinger. Inter's fans and their players celebrated their long-awaited success for almost an hour after the game ended, while Mourinho only briefly joined the party, raising and lowering the European Cup in one swift movement – leaving centre-stage to his players.

The only other men to win the European Cup with two different clubs were Ernst Happel (Feyenoord in 1970 and Hamburg SV in 1983) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and Bayern in 2001). With time on his side, there seems little doubt that Mourinho has more Champions League victories in him – wherever he may end up in the future.

**Champions League holders Barcelona are knocked out by Jose Mourinho’s 10-man Inter Milan, who book their place in the final despite a 1-0 defeat at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona's efforts to become the first team to retain the Champions League trophy, meanwhile, ended in frustration in the face of a sensationally stoic defensive show from the Italians.

After Thaigo Motta's first-half sending off, Inter had their backs against the wall for long periods. Pique gave Barcelona the lead late on, but despite plenty of pressure Barca could not score the goal they needed to advance to the final as Inter won 3-2 on aggregate.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola congratulated Inter but noted that the dismissal of Thiago Motta actually worked against his team as the Blaugrana exited the UEFA Champions League at the semi-final stage.

**An Ivica Olic hat-trick helped guide Bayern Munich into the final of the Champions League at the expense of French side Lyon.

Leading 1-0 from the first-leg Bayern dominated proceedings from the outset on Tuesday night and always looked the more likely to progress to the show piece final against either Barcelona or Inter Milan next month.

The tie was effectively over when Olic got his first of the game, the crucial away goal, on 26 minutes after a smart turn in the box, meaning Lyon needed to score three times to win the tie.

The French side's chances of overcoming such a hurdle were slim and became practically impossible not long into the second half when Lyon's captain Cris was harshly sent off after receiving two quick yellow cards.

The first booking, for a foul on Olic, looked at tad unlucky but he did himself no favours by sarcastically clapping referee Massimo Busacca for his decision, earning him a second yellow and an early bath.

Not long after the game was over when Altintop played a clever reverse pass to Olic in the Lyon penalty area and the Croatian striker finished smartly past Hugo Lloris.

Ten minutes later Olic completed his hat-trick, heading home Philipp Lahm's cross, to send Lyon crashing out of the competition and Bayern into the final.

*Barcelona’s attempt to becoming European soccer’s first repeat champion in two decades was jeopardized with a 3-1 loss to Inter Milan on Tuesday night in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals.

Barcelona appeared fatigued as the game went on, perhaps from a 450-mile bus trip the team was forced to take. Flights were grounded across Europe following the volcanic eruption in Iceland, and Inter may have to take a similar trip for the second leg of the total-goals series in Barcelona next Wednesday.

“I’m not a doctor so I couldn’t say if the journey affected us,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. “The result wasn’t good and we lost the ball too often. Today wasn’t our best game.”

Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito scored for Inter, seeking to become Europe’s champion for the first time since consecutive titles in 1964 and 1965. Inter frustrated FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi, whose four goals in the second leg of the quarterfinals eliminated Arsenal.

“It isn’t a dream. It is real,” Inter coach Jose Mourinho said. “When I came here I found a team that was small in Champions League terms and a team that struggled to qualify for the elimination rounds. Now we have beaten the best team in the world.”

Pedro Rodriguez scored on a low shot in the 19th minute for Barcelona, but Sneijder tied the score off a pass from Milito in the 30th minute and Maicon put Inter ahead in the 48th on an overlapping run, again from a Milito pass.

Milito scored the final goal on a header in the 61st after Samuel Eto’o broke down a wing and crossed to Sneijder, who nodded the ball back.

AC Milan was the last repeat champion, winning when the competition was known as the Champions Cup in 1989 and 1990.

“We tried but we couldn’t find the spaces we wanted. That happens sometimes when you play against a great team like Inter,” Guardiola said. “We started to attack with a high tempo at the end of the game and gave Inter’s defense doubts, but it didn’t change how the match finished.”

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will be suspended for the second leg because of a yellow card for a foul on Milito.

In the other semifinal, Bayern Munich hosts Lyon on Wednesday night.

**Bayern Munich took it to Lyon on Wednesday and came away with a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Allianz-Arena.

Early on, Bastian Schweinsteiger saw a couple of chances go agonizingly widde as the Germans controlled the tempo early.

Arjen Robben was then guilty of a horrible miss on 20 minutes when Hugo Lloris likely well beaten.

Matters started going downhill, however, as Bayern midfielder Danijel Pranjic picked up a booking in the 27th minute that will keep him out of the second leg.

Then, in the 37th minute, Franck Ribéry was sent off for a horrendous studs-up tackle on Lisandro López.

Lyon, however, failed to take advantage and they actually gave back the extra man in the 54th minute when Jérémy Toulalan picked up his second booking of the match.

With all matters again even, Bayern took the lead in the 69th minute when Robben hit a brilliant drive from outside the area to elude the helpless Lloris.

Lyon never found a way back, and they will take the narrow deficit into the second leg at Stade Gerland.

Nicklas Bendtner had fired the Gunners into a shock lead on 18 minutes. But Messi soon drew Barcelona level after capitalising on a mistake by Mikael Silvestre.

For the remainder the holders threw on Andres Iniesta as a warm up for the weekend trip to Real Madrid and kept the ball with ease until that man Messi, grabbed his fourth after his way from three white shirts to force Almunia into a stop only for Barca's magician to embrace the rebound with trademark class to fire under the shot-stopper's legs from a tight angle to make it 4-1 and complete his first ever four goal haul in the Barcelona shirt.

**Wesley Sneijder’s sixth minute direct kick goal left CSKA needing three goals, drastically changing the complexion of the tie. Almost immediately after the goal, Internazionale ceded possession to CSKA and concentrated on defending while probing the Muscovites on the counter. That formula was enough to give the Italian champions a 1-0 victory.

Sneijder’s goal came after a foul was given 23 meters out, even with Igor Akinfeev’s left post. The midfielder’s right-footed shot was slid under the jumping CSKA wall. His view obstructed, Akinfeev got a late read on the ball and could only stick his left leg out to try and stop the shot. Though he got a piece of the ball, Akinfeev was unable to prevent the vital Inter goal.

Final results the 2-0 aggregate score means Jose Mourinho becomes the first manager to lead three different clubs to the Champions League semi-finals, and sends Inter into the last four for the first time since 2003.

Chamakh got the goal but Lyon cruised into the semi-finals

**Lyon reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in club history with victory over Ligue 1 rivals Bordeaux.

Les Gones can thank goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for a dramatic late save.

With Lyon losing 1-0 on the night and clinging to an aggregate lead three minutes from time, Lloris leaped across goal to beat clear Wendel's goalbound bullet header.

Marouane Chamakh's first-half goal ultimately counted for nothing as Lyon's first-leg advantage held up through a tense second half.

It was no less than they deserved as, save for a spell late in the first half, they were the more composed team on the night.

Lyon went close to getting what could have been a killer away goal as early as the eighth minute, when Michel Bastos sent a powerful free-kick inches wide of the top right-hand corner of the net.

The visitors were enjoying the better of the opening stages as Bafetimbi Gomis headed just over from Cesar Delgado's corner.

Bordeaux were struggling to get their primary weapon, Chamakh, into the game, and instead their first chance went to Yoann Gourcuff, who headed over when allowed to escape his marker and meet Silva Wendell's inswinging free-kick.

When Chamakh finally did get on the ball inside the area, Jean-Alain Boumsong was able to block his shot before the referee blew for a handball by the Bordeaux forward anyway.

However, the hosts were beginning to find their feet, pegging Lyon back as they sent in several crosses to test the visitors' defence.

Wendell then delivered another free-kick from an identical spot to his first to create another chance for Chamakh. Boumsong's touch dropped the ball at his feet, but the big defender recovered to block Chamakh's shot on the turn.

At the other end, Aly Cissokho could be grateful to escape with a yellow for hitting out at Wendell after losing the ball on the left wing.

Cissokho was riding his luck when he brought down Wendell again to set up a third free-kick from the right wing, but this time the delivery did not clear the first defender.

With half-time approaching, Alou Diarra rattled the crossbar with a superb strike from distance that left Lloris with no chance, but still left Bordeaux lamenting their luck.

But seconds later, they were right back in the tie and inevitably it was Chamakh who got the goal.

Benoit Tremoulinas' cross from the left was touched on by Jaroslav Plasil and Chamakh was on hand to stab home from close range and leave the game beautifully poised at half-time.

Lyon gave Bordeaux a wake-up call early in the second half as Gomis skipped past goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso but, having been forced wide, could only find defender Marc Planus as he cut the ball back.

Bastos then lashed a shot wide from just outside the area as Bordeaux were slow the to start the half once again.

Lyon continued to pile on the pressure, with Michael Ciani forced to dive and head Bastos' goalbound shot away for a corner.

Bordeaux were producing little as an attacking force, but were perhaps unlucky not to get a penalty when Cris clumsily bundled over Chamakh on the edge of the area.

The hosts continued to push for any sort of chance they could create.

Gourcuff's dangerous free-kick from the left was headed away by Mathieu Bodmer under intense pressure, and from the resulting corner Gourcuff found Ludovic Sane free of his marker at the far post but he headed wide from a great position.

Lloris then made the save that kept Lyon in the Champions League, stretching out a strong left hand to claw away Wendell's powerful header back across goal from Mathieu Chalme's cross with three minutes left.

Diego Milito scored to give Inter Milan a 1-0 win at home against CSKA Moscow

**MILAN, March 31 Argentine forward Diego Milito struck in the second half to hand Inter Milan a deserved 1-0 home win over CSKA Moscow in their Champions League quarter-final, first leg on Wednesday.

Milito struck in the 65th minute after linking up with midfielder Wesley Sneijder, but Inter missed chances to score either side of the goal while dominating the game.

Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev kept his side in the match with crucial saves and while his opposite Julio Cesar had little to do he had to react quickly to deny Moscow striker Tomas Necid late on.

However, for much of the match the visitors, very much the underdogs, gave as good as they got, producing two long-range first-half efforts - from Yevgeny Aldonin and Deividas Semberas - that tested Inter keeper Julio Cesar.

**Cesc Fabregas and Arsenal fought their way back from the dead against Barcelona tonight to earn a 2-2 draw at the Emirates after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given the visitors a seemingly comfortable two goal lead.

Cesc Fabregas’ late penalty earned Arsenal a dramatic 2-2 against 10-man Barcelona on Wednesay in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

The first half was dreadful for Arsenal as both William Gallas and Andrei Arshavin were forced off injured, but Barça’s many attempts on goal were thwarted by the defense and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, including from Lionel Messi’s free kick late in the half.

Parity lasted less than 30 seconds in the second half, however, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired the visitors in front with a deft chip of Almunia.

The Swede doubled the advantage just short of the hour mark, taking a pass from Xavi before slamming home.

But Arsenal would find their salvation with six minutes left. Bendtner cleverly chested the ball down to Fabregas six yards out. Puyol clattered in to him as he was set to pull the trigger. It was a crystal clear penalty and the Barcelona captain duly received a red card.

Puyol was sent off and misses next week's second leg, as will Fabregas after he picked up a yellow card in the first half.

**Olympique Lyon's Argentine striker Lisandro Lopez scored twice to helped his side beat Girondins Bordeaux 3-1 in a lively first leg of the Champions League's first all-French quarter-final last night.

Home side Lyon, hoping to make the last four of European club football's premier event for the first time, opened the scoring through Lopez, but were pegged back minutes later with a splendid goal by Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh.

Lyon made it 2-1 courtesy of Brazilian winger Michel Bastos around the half-hour and a Lopez penalty 13 minutes from time gave them a significant advantage over French champions Bordeaux, who ended Lyon's seven-year reign at the top of Ligue 1 last year.

The winners face Manchester United or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals to try to become the first French club to play the Champions League final since Monaco lost it to Jose Mourinho's Porto in 2004.

**Ivica Olic hit an injury-time winner to give Bayern Munich the advantage after the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final with Manchester United.

Bayern defensive blunders when Wayne Rooney knocked in a deflected Nani free kick just over a minute into the match. Martin Demichelis, who could not blame bad peripheral vision from his mask, simply got deked out of his shoes by the English star, and Van Bommel’s deflection of the ball made it that much easier for Rooney.

Bayern raised their game after the break, Ribery teeing up Olic, whose over-ambitious attempt to beat Van der Sar at the near-post failed. A free kick from Franck Ribery was significantly deflected by the wall and flew into the left corner of the goal with keeper Van der Sar only able to watch.

United almost restored their lead six minutes later when Nemanja Vidic headed onto the crossbar from a corner kick.

And Bayern could have decided the match in the first minute of added time when Mario Gomez forced Van der Sar to make a great save.

But that winning goal did come in the 92nd minute as Ivica Olic collected the ball in the penalty area, dribbled away from the defenders and found space to blast it past the keeper for 2-1.

Villa hat-trick seals progress

**David Villa scored a hat-trick as Valencia advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals on away goals after a thrilling draw against Werder Bremen.

Valencia grabbed the lead after two minutes through Villa and Juan Manuel Mata made it 2-0 with just quarter of an hour gone.

Hugo Almeida pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 26th minute before Villa grabbed his second just before the interval.

Torsten Frings scored from the penalty spot in the 57th minute and Marko Marin made it 3-3 just five minutes later, but Villa completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute and Claudio Pizarro's strike six minutes from time was not enough for the home side.

Valencia jumped ahead just two minutes into the game after a poor headed clearance which landed right at the feet of David Silva. The Spain international found Villa in space on the left and he beat Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese with a shot into the far corner.

Bremen had two fine chances through Aaron Hunt and Claudio Pizarro but it was Valencia who scored again on 15 minutes as Silva was the provider once more, finding Mata who fired past Wiese.

That prompted Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf to bring on another striker, Miguel Almeida, in place of midfielder Tim Borowski after just 21 minutes.

And Almeida cut the deficit just five minutes after coming on, slotting home Pizarro's fine cross.

The German side continued to push forward and Hunt and Almeida both failed to take advantage of chances nine minutes from the break.

And Villa silenced the Bremen crowd just before half-time, firing home from eight yards after Silva's pass from the touchline.

The gap was back to one after 57 minutes as Bremen captain Frings converted a penalty after Jordi Alba brought down Marin in the area.

Frings' shot was hit directly at Valencia goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez but he could only punch the ball into his own goal.

Marin equalised five minutes later with Mesut Ozil setting up the young German international to beat Sanchez.

However, Valencia held their nerve and Villa collected a long diagonal pass from Mata before beating Wiese and completing his hat-trick after 65 minutes.

Bremen refused to give up and Pizarro equalised with a header in the 84th minute for his ninth goal of the competition, but the home side could not score the vital winner in five minutes of stoppage time.

**Messi struck a brilliant opener after just 12 minutes to put Barca on track, and then played a key role as Pedro Rodriguez made it 2-0 soon after as the Catalan giants built a 5-1 aggregate lead.

Messi made it 3-0 on the hour with a low shot on the turn, after a long move culminated by Pedro and Toure.

Barca did manage to get one more goal though as substitutes Ibrahimovic and Bojan combined in the 89th minute for the latter to slide home a low shot from outside the area.

Fresh from his stunning treble in Sunday's 3-0 win over Valencia - his second hat-trick in 2010 already - the Argentinian broke the deadlock with a superb finish.

**Bordeaux reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup for the first time in 22 years, beating Olympiakos 2-1 after goals from Yoann Gourcuff and Marouane Chamakh.

Gourcuff put Bordeaux ahead in the fifth minute but Olympiakos leveled midway through the second half through substitute Kostas Mitroglou. The visitors looked the better side until Chamakh scored with a brilliant header in the 88th as Bordeaux advanced 3-1 on aggregate.

**CSKA Moscow are trough to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League following a 1-2 win at Sevilla on Tuesday. The first leg ended 1-1.

Sevilla had the first good chance of the match on 17 minutes as a volley from Luis Fabiano forced keeper Igor Akinfeev to make a great save.

Brilliant goal from Necid against the run of play, Honda spins his marker after a low throw-in on the right is directed into his body. Tomas Necid scored with a precise low shot late in the first half half but Sevilla immediately responded through Diego Perotti's close-range effort, 1-0 position CSKA Moscow lead.

In minute 41, event a rare long ball was not cleared by the defence, allowing Navas on the right of the area to stab it across for the onrushing Perotti to take a touch and poke home, change position 1-1.

But the tie turned decisively when Palop was deceived by Honda's left-foot free-kick over the wall from 30 yards out which Palop is right behind, and a crucial second away goal.

**Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho got his revenge on Chelsea as a late goal from Samuel Eto'o sealed a 1-0 last 16 second leg victory at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday for a 3-1 aggregate victory.

The former Chelsea coach had, prior to the match, promised to forego any personal celebrations as a mark of respect to his old club, but was nevertheless left filled with pride as Inter did a very professional job in west London.

Samuel Eto'o got the only goal of the night with just over 10 minutes remaining to give Inter a 1-0 win and make it an enjoyable return to Stamford Bridge for Mourinho.

**Manchester United strolled into the last eight of the Champions League for the fourth successive season with a routine 4-0 victory against AC Milan at Old Trafford that sealed a 7-2 aggregate win.

The first goals for Manchester United re-established themselves and took the lead in the 13th minute. Gary Neville was allowed to advance in the Milan half and sent in an inch-perfect cross for Rooney to outjump Daniele Bonera and head past Christian Abbiati.

Within attacks United have extended their lead, Nani played a superb pass with the outside of his foot to play Rooney in on goal, sprinted down the left and then sent an astute ball towards Rooney, who go to it before Abbiati and rolled under the keeper and into the net from 17 yards.

After half-time after Ji-Sung Park drilled in the third on the hour as United exerted complete control, he to slide the ball past Abbiati into the far corner, the Red Devils went 3-0 up.

In the 88th minute as Rafael put in a good cross, Fletcher has just emphasised the point by heading a Rafael cross in at the back post.

**Arjen Robben's superb strike sent Bayern Munich through to the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals on Tuesday despite a 3-2 defeat by Fiorentina in a thrilling last 16 second leg.

The Italian team carried the game to its opponent and appeared set to snatch the series from the Bundesliga giants. From winger Juan Vargas gave Fiorentina the lead in the 27th minute, Vargas missed an audacious free kick from 40 yards.

Gilardino stopped the ball dead with a marvellous touch with his heel, teeing it up for Stevan Jovetic to smash home from about 10 yards, Jovetic made it 2-0 after 54 minutes. That's a wonderful goal by Fiorentina.

A well-struck goal by Bayern's captain, Mark van Bommel, off a cross from Franck Ribery, who had lured three defenders out of position, made it 2-1, tying the series on aggregate, 3-3, with each team having scored one vital road goal.

Fiorentina fans believed they had it won when Jovetic, a 20-year-old rising star from Montenegro, scored his second goal of the match, making it 3-1 in the 64th minute, but 72 seconds later Robben ruined their hopes.

Taking the ball on the right flank and cutting inside his defenders, Robben let fly with a shot from 30 yards that sailed into the upper left corner of the net. There was little that Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey could do about the shot.

The game ended with a 3-2 Fiorentina win and with the series tied at 4-4, but Bayern advanced because of its two away goals. That left fans at the Artemio Franchi Stadium chanting "Thieves, Thieves" in reference to what they perceived as the first-leg robbery in Munich.
